I am at the point of “paving” city streets now. I am using shirt board (cardboard with one side a white enamel finish). The period modelled is anywhere from 1930 to 1950, so I want the streets to look sort of “tired” but not decrepit.
I could go with asphalt or concrete, but I think I prefer the latter. Either way, I’m sure I can’t just paint them gray or black. Anyone have any suggestions how to tint the colors to get something that looks reasonable?
Try starting with a light coat of ordinary gray primer. ( Don’t go for too wet a coat as this will cause the cardboard to warp. ) Next try a light overspray with a light tan such as the flat camo paint from Krylon. Let this dry and add detail such as cracks with a Pilot brand pen and washes of watered down acrylic craft paints (found in the craft section of the big discount stores) to simulate oil and mud stains. This works for me. Just experiment first on getting the color you want. Once you find it, make a note of the formula and materials. Otherwise the dreaded C.R.S.(Can’t Remember Stuff) may cause a start from scratch. Yes… I speak from experience! Good luck and have fun.

This really is a matter of perspective and taste. Most folks tend to see roads a little differntly. So go with what looks good to you. Then get some criticism from others, both MRs and non MRs. And keep in mind cisco’s point:
CRS – this is a VERY good point. Be sure to write down the mix that gives you the color you like.
