Painting down the middle.

I need to paint the inside of tracks for oil stains. I would use an airbrush, but I don’t trust it.

So not using an airbrush, how would you do it?

paint brush and drag it down the middle, thats what i did and it worked quite well

[#ditto] The paintbru***echnique works very well indeed. It gave me the nasty oil effect just like on the tracks that run through my town. Very realistic. [8D]

That is what I did, as well. Use a thin brush, grimey black, and drag the tip down the middle so that only the top 1/3 of the bristles encounters the ties and ballast. It goes faster than you’d expect…no, really!

The old alcohol and India ink mix would be my choice.

I like to dry brush, you can keep adding color until it looks good. Too wet a brush can cause nasty blobs and uneven areas soaked into the ballast.

Thanks guys.

Another possibility: Use a small spray bottle filled with a little India ink diluted in water. Run the spray bottle down the track pumping away to send controlled bursts of India ink between the tracks for oil stains.

use an eye dropper and dribble india ink a drop at a time down the middle of the track…jetrock…sorry, but i tried your method and it doesn’t work too well…too much ink sprayed into places i didn’t want it to go…it let out too much ink in too wide of a pattern that went to the outside of the rails and too much ink ran thru the ballast and also flowed to the outside of the rails …chuck
