Painting Locomotives / Bow Waves and curves

I’m wondering if anyone has some tried and tested techniques for painting a bow wave on a Locomotive. I’m a Pere Marquette / C&O modeler and want to paint a couple of EMD E7’s in the as delevered Pere Marquette paint scheme. Thanks

Mel showed how he did an SP stripe of this kind of complexity not long ago.

I’m not familiar with the Pere Marquette paint scheme. I did a CAD drawing of the SP Daylight deep V on the E7s. I used the CAD drawing as a template for masking. I used a combination of 3M ¼” Automotive masking tape (it is more flexible for curves) and 3M Scotch Blue Painters Tape for Delicate Surfaces #2080. The Automotive and Delicate Surfaces tape doesn’t pull up the base paint.

It went much better than I expected, had to do the first paint job over after a slight learning curve. I painted 4 E7As that turned out pretty good.

Here is a link to the project on my blog:

Good Luck.

Hello all,

Other than a lot of masking and painting you might consider sheet decal material A.K.A. Trim Film from Microscale Decals.

Make a template, cut out the curves as needed and apply like any other decal.

Hope this helps.
