I finally got around to starting it. I hope to have it finished by this weekend.

DRIVERS & SIDE RODS REMOVES
FRAME W/BRAKE SHOES & RODS
I didn’t have to strip the clear coat because there wasn’t any, nor was there any tarnish. I soaked the engine in Vinegar for about 20 minutes to etch the brass followed by a warm bath of dish soap, then left to dry. I then airbrushed the FLOQUEL PRIMER followed by a mix of FLOQUEL 2 PARTS ENGINE BLACK & GRIMMY BLACK. The color is perfect. The pictures don’t do it any justice. I wanted a engine that wasn’t to black but looked somewhat weathered and show all the fine details. The next step is to do the frame followed by the drivers. I ordered FLOQUEL GRAPHITE to do the smokebox and firebox. The front of all (3) cylinders also gets a Graphite color. Then finish it with an airbrush of GLOSS COAT, apply decals and then finish it with an airbrush of DULLCOTE. The finish came out perfect considering it’s a $100.00 airbrush and compressor.[:D]
looks great !!!
man that thing has a lot of wheels [:)] . it would have taken me a lot of hemming and hawing to take that apart and start painting it . i agree with you on the color , grimy black isn’t black enough and engine black is too black , all the details seem to vanish
i don’t know about anyone else but the links aren’t working for me so i just did a copy of everything from http to jpg and pasted that in my browser and the picture came up
Had to repost the pics. Actually it took me 2 days before I had enough balls to start taking the rods and wheels off. I drew up on my computer were everything went and also labled the wheels and all the small screws so I knew how this thing went back together.
Hats off to you!! Can’t wait to see what it looks like when you finish–you’re certainly going about it the right way. I envy you being able to use a compressor–my air-brush just scares the Bananas out of me–only used it once since I bought it, and even THEN I screwed it up–anyone out there want a Passch–CHEAP?
That’s one hunk of gorgeous locomotive, there!!
Tom [bow][bow]
That is looking awesome 8500HP! I can’t wait to see it when you are done. It should be quite a piece. The 4-12-2 is one of my favorite locomotives.[:D]
Question for you. The Texas and Pacific behind the 9000 class…Is that a Bachmann 2-10-4 Texas Chugger?[?]
Good Eye [;)] That is exactly what it is. I have 2 of them that need the drivers quartered. They both bind like crazy. They are not bad loco’s though. I got them really cheap from Ebay. A little work and they will good loco’s.
Counter Weight,
I was running it at the club and you can hear it binding a little bit when going aroung radiuses like 36". The engine came with 2 blind drivers which I am going to install in the middle wheels.
Cheap? How cheap is cheap? I was looking for one, and I still am to some extent. When I checked eBay, they all shot up out of my price range. Did you get them cheap because the drivers were unquartered?
I didn’t thin it at all. The camera makes it look really flat. But it is slightly blacker. I used 15PSI. I plan to do some HEAVY weathering. I can’t stand to have any of my models looking new. I think the weathering will make it look even better. I also heated it in the oven to make the paint rock hard. It will come in handy when taping off the smokebox and firebox. The front of the 3 cylinders will have to be hand painted though.
I got one for $23.00 and the other for $31.00. I know this might make you sick, They both have smoke and sound.[:0]. They run ok the way they are. But the drivers are not quartered exactly from the factory. With a little tinkering they can be a smooth runner. The drivers spin easy on the axles. Since they spin so freely they become out very easy. A little glue after quartering solves that.
I knew the Texas Chugger has smoke and sound. It is essentially a Northern shell with an altered frame. I’ve never heard the sound on it, is it good? The best description I’ve read is “an electronic chug.”
It was the sound that raised my interest in the model. But all the ones I found went over $75, so I could never afford them at that time. But $23 and $31? Good Gawd, that’s cheap.
Im still using Floquil as sold by the Hobby shop. I have to use thinner to get it out of the brush so I expect it to be solvent based. I have not seen the “New Stuff” other that I dont have to use “Barrier” or “Dio Sol” anymore thank goodness.
A little tip for you when using tape on fresh paint, deaden the adhesive on the tape by rubbing it against something to take a little bit of the stickiness out of the tape. That way it is less likely to pull up any fresh paint when it’s unmasking time. The engine looks great, very nice work I hope to see some finished photos when you have it decalled and weathered.
