Painting P1K Budd RDC Interiors and Lower Chassis

I started working on painting the interior of my Budd RDC P1K and removed the four screws on the circuit board to move it sideways to get better access to the seats. I started by testing one seat with Pollyscale water based paint, but found it too thin to cover well. Should I used something else? Also, the lower chassis comes painted in a dark blue. My online research shows black or silver, or black with the center “box” being silver. Can anyone clue me in on what colors (engine black, grimy black, what color for silver- perhaps aluminum- might work best ? Cedarwoodron

The seats could have some mold release still present. Sounds like you’re not taking things completely apart? You may have to. Once cleaned up, they may take paint better. It may also help to shoot them with a coat of primer (gray?), then try your paint of choice again.

As for underneath, whatever the original color, underframes often turned black from picking up grime. Not sure what your prototype is, but I’d say you’d probably want to go with something dark, instead of aluminum.

Good call on the mold release- I completely forgot about that. The seat plastic did have a bit of slippery feel to them. Overcame my fear of disassembly, took off the RP1 and LP1 red wires from the board, snaked the wires out of the seat insert and, after removing the insert (several screws), gave it a 91 alcohol bath before painting. Just for fun, I will use address labels to print and adhere a center aisle floor pattern and, of course, get a few passengers on board. Now, as to lighting the interior…? Cedarwoodron
