Painting plastic handrails

I have quite a few HO locos with plastic handrails that need touch up or additional painting.

I am looking for recommendations re: brands, type of paint, diluting materials/percentages for brushing, etc.

Are there any paints (in railroad colors) that have any vinyl (or other similar substance) in them to make them more flexible and less resistant to flaking off?

Any other tips?

Today’s version of Model Railroader magazine on line had an article on painting acetal plastic handrails using radio control car paint made by Pactra or Tamiya.

Your going to have to guess at the colors with that paint. They says it’s real flexable for the slot car bodies. I bought a can of automotive plastic adhesion paint. (Duplicolor) It worked pretty good. It’s a clear primer coat. Read the directions though. Your NOT supposed to let it dry completely before painting the color on. (you have to remove the handrails to make it EZ.)

[(-D]Removing the handrails is one thing, putting them back on, that’s a different kettle of fish entirely.[(-D]

MR magazine had an article not too long ago that said to use automobile paint “adhesion promoter”. I bought some from the local auto paint store and it works great. YOu spray your handrails first with this clear coat and then paint over it. YOu can bend your handrails and the paint will not flake off.

Mine is made by Sherwin Williams #UPO7226 and sell for 18 dollars a can…not cheap.

Another option that works is to get the handrails bead blasted. It cuts the sheen off of the rails, and gives them tooth, then regular RR paint works fine.

I got my can of the above mentioned Duplicolor at Advanced Auto for $5.
