I would suggest you find a hobby shop in your area and pick up some of the “how to” books and videos they carry.
You can also do a “key-word search” of the forum, there was some discussion on just that subject a few days ago here.
The ties can be painted a blackish brown with an airbrush. To paint the rails a rusty color, mask off the ties so the color can’t get on them and paint the sides of the rails with a rust color. I use Rust-Oleum Rusty Metal Primer for this.
