painting roadbed

is it necessary or recommended to paint the cork roadbed before laying the rail or what is the norm for this as well as what color for roadbed and bench work is recommended if it is ?[:D]

LYNN…what the hell are you doing??? TRAITOR!!!

This was discussed a month or so ago, in another thread, but I can’t find it now to post a link. There were some good points made then. And a lot of different opinions as well.

It seems most folks paint their roadbed. I haven’t yet, as I’m still under construction, but I would paint mine a color close to the ballast I would be laying, so any thin spots in the ballast wouldn’t be quite so noticeable.

As for the benchwork, paint it dirt color for the area you are modeling. My son is doing his N scale layout for Atlanta area RR’s, so he went to the paint store with a chunk of mud of my wifes car, and had them mix the paint to match the dirt clod he had. Looks pretty durn close to Georgia Red Clay to me!.

JMHO…your mileage may vary. [:D]

It was a joke Lynn, lighten up. You have a bad day at the candle shop?

sorry you took it that way. I apologize.

Painting is actually the last step in my roadbed preparation. First, I try to minimize any gaps in the roadbed, and I fill those that remain with latex caulk. Then I take a small Surform tool and knock the sharp corners off the roadbed, because they always want to poke through the ballast. Finally, I open the windows, turn on a fan, and paint the roadbed with one of the gray fleck stone spray paints (I get mine at Home Depot; I believe the brand is American Accents but I’m not sure without looking). After that dries, I lay track.
The paint is not a substitute for ballast, but it looks pretty good in the meantime, and the actual ballasting goes faster because the roadbed doesn’t show through like it would if it were unpainted.
Thanks for reading MR,

Lynn, I really thought I remembered putting an LOL on the end of it. I’m really sorry. I didnt mean it that way. Saw your posts on AMR, too. Think I’ll leave this online stuff alone. I’m really not too good at it.

[#ditto][#ditto][#ditto][#ditto] I’m with Terry on this.

Happy Railroading.[swg][swg]

I removed it [:)]

I don’t paint my roadbed i just ballest mine. Because i’ve seen some people paint it and it just didn’t look like a real railroad when they finish.
