I just ordered a new engine for my fleet a Athearn #4645 GP 38-2 In Rock Island blue.
Any suggestions on painting the handrails blue?
What paint and color is closest and the best for this.

Old Athearn or new Athearn? Most Athearn engines now have molded plastic handrails that match the body color.

Its the old blue box version.
Have to put the old wire handrails on myself.
well I used Testors gloss blue 2508 on mine ( old atheran custom paint) and it turned out well. Except where I painted blue where it should have been white ! But oh well live and learn.
Why not see if you can get a set of spare handrails for the new Athern from Athern or your LHS… that way you should get both the modern thin rails and the colour… BUT… I haven’t got round to this myself yet so don’t know if they will fit. (If they do let us (me)! know please…
Well my GP38-2 The Rock arrived and to my surprise it comes with blue handrails even though its a blue box kit. It has the newer plastic ones which are very nice.
All it needs is some white paint on certain areas to be correct and some added details and it will be ready to added to my fleet.
It sure is a nice looking locomotive. The Rock paint scheme sure is a good looking one.
