I have a Downtown Deco Grimm’s Funeral Home kit I’m building. I know there are instructions in the kit as to how to paint the piece. My question is: my railroad is in an area that does not have consistent humidity, and sometimes gets quite damp feeling. Routinely I paint the insides of wood structures to both alleviate the stresses on the wood and also to seal the wood itself. Do I need to also paint the interiors of a plaster kit to mitigate any possible water intrusion. I’m not talking about the structure actually getting wet, just the humidity in the room is what I’m concerned about.
Good question , no answer. I’m building one of their models right now myself. The coin laundry. Myself as a matter of course, I paint both sides of everything I build plastic or Hydrocal. I think Hydrocal would be ok unpainted, but like I said I paint both sides of everything. That Funeral Home is quite a kit from what I’ve seen. Looks nice.
Hydrocal castings are very stable even when wet. It couldn’t hurt to seal the entire casting before assembly though. If you experience some extreme moisture the only thing that could ever happen is a discoloration that may occur possibly showing though lighter colors.
I seal both sides with a coat of thinned Shellace, use alcohol. It soaks in good so a second coat is used sometimes.
My Crow River NH Pagoda roof signal towers built over 30 years ago are still like new even after being in a box in my hot hot garage for 23 years.
