I had some poor quality ballast I used… and now after I applied the adhesive to stick it down it’s greened…
So, how would I go about painting the ballast? And, what colour would appear most realistic?

I use three spray paint colors to paint the ballast…krylon primer gray, black, and red oxide primer…be sure you cover the rails and ties…i usually hold card stock against them then give the ballast quick bursts of the different color paints…primer gray is used first and the most, but then i follow up with the black and the red oxide primer in random patterns on top of the primer gray…be sure there is plenty of ventilation when using the paints…also an air brush using variations of these colors works well…Chuck
When I secure my ballast using a 50/50 solution of water/carpenter glue with a couple of drops of alcohol I also add water based tole paint to give it a stained oily look. You may want to try this but:
Warning: Adding water to this situation may cause more green die to leach through!
You may have to do this over again,
Sorry
