whats the story on paint on wheelsets that make contact with the rails.logic tells me to keep them factory fresh bot what a hassel to mask them off. read articles about pantg and detailing whit no warning or info on subject.
If using an airbrush. paint at a 90 degree angle to the side. This should keep the treads pretty clean. When paint is dry, make a quick pass over the treads with a bright boy and you should be good to go. If you are painting them by hand. Well then just dont paint on the tread.

You shouldn’t paint the wheel treads, just the faces and maybe the backs and axles. Real wheels have shiny treads anyway, unless they’ve been sitting still for a long time.
When I paint wheelsets I just give them a swish with either Polly Scale Rail Brown or Roof Brown. If I get a little on the tread, I wipe it off before it gets a chance to dry.
