That might be true if you are “painting” a large area but with the fine detail that I use the Sharpie for, I don’t think it is going to appear purple. I use fluorescent lighting and all my Sharpie colored detail looks black to me.
Yeah, but I’ve gotten by a few times with a Sharpie over dullcote. Managed not to make it run or smear on some of my grafiffi. [:O] Its possible, you just gotta know what you’re doing.
A few months back there was an article in RMC on just this topic, detailing using markers (he included other art markers in addition to Sharpies). Pretty much everything we discussed - pipeloads, door hinges, steel drum band markings, detail parts, weathering, and so on. Well, that’s all well and good, and of course I ran out and brought two different gray markers, and a silver Sharpie. I did NOT like the silver sharpie at all, as it seemed like the old Testors (I think testors) paint pens - just thick silver chrome paint coming out of a felt tip. Whoopee…so, I put the Sharpie away…
To come to the moral of this story, well, there is none - I just saw this thread, remember I had the silver Sharpie, and just used it to touch up the scratch-up chrome-painted rough metal base of a key holder. It was easy and the base looks nicer now, so thanks to the OP!
I have used a black Sharpie to “paint” the metal weights on Accurail hopper cars. I like the fact that I don’t have to wait for the paint to dry, as the Sharpie dries almost instantly. The only thing that concerns me is that the ink might react with the metal over time. Maybe someone else can chime in on that one?

I am with you when it comes to not having to open a paint can if it isn’t necessary. I use Sharpies all of the time. One thing I use it for is cracks and potholes on the roadways.
They look great. I also had the same experience as some with running, so I alcohol wash first then add the Sharpie marks.
I’m sure this has been mentioned, but Minwax Marking pens or stains also work wonders when it come to my craftman wood kits. I’ve done whole buildings with these stain magic markers. They come in all stain colors and I find them at the big box hardware stores, Wal-Mart, Ace, etc.
If you scratch and dent the wood, or lift some of the siding of the buildings with a straight edge razor, (CAREFULL), then run the Min Wax marking pens over the wood and distressed areas you ought to see the results.
After you stain the wood then you can also alcohol/India ink the building and it is amazing as to the results.
