Paints

What is the difference between acrylic and enamal paints and which should I use on atlas railings for safety yellow?

Thanks

Acrylics are generally water or alcohol based. Enamels usually solvent based. Use neither on handrails as the slick plastic makes a difficult bond. Paint designed for RC cars, has worked pretty well for me.

A article about paint types:

As Mike said neither Enamals nor Acrylics work well on handrails. They are usually an “engineering plastic”. These paint types do not stick to it and its flexibity (the reasons it is used for handrails) makes the situation worse. If the surface is roughened by by light sanding (400-600 grit sandpaper ) the paint will adhere better.

RC car modelers usually use lacquer paints. Probably the best solution is to use one of the lacquer model paints referenced in the linked article.

Depending on what Atlas has in parts stock, the handrails may be available in yellow from them. I only mention this because yellow is one of those colors that can be hard to get coverage on, no matter what the paint is.

I agree with the paint for R/C cars. It’s tough and will stick to that slick plastic well.

I’ve tried latex paint, no go there. Sharpies don’t work either. I’ve even tried laundry markers.

You may want to consider using a plastic primer. These allow you to coat with with acrylics

I also will go with the Rc paint, I have used on many railings and grabs without chipping. It will bend with the part painted…

The paint I am referring to is made by Pactra Racing Finish, it is a ACRYL paint…

Cheers, again,
