Panavise options--which one?

First, I’d like to say thanks to those who have already answered my previous beginner type questions. This forum is an excellent resource.

My question: I’m thinking about getting a panavise. While the standard and junior heads both now fit the standard base, should I start out with a standard head or the junior? I want this mainly to hold rolling stock kits.

Thanks

Mark;

For building HO scale car kit, a Bowsedr #22 cradle works a whole lot better than a vise. http://www.bowser-trains.com/misc/misc.htm

Vises have there place - for holding things while filng, using a motor tool, etc.

vises are used when you are going to do some heaviy working on something and you don’t want it to move (e.g. sawing/filing brass) but if you are detailing rolling stock as it sounds then you risk damaging the paint or plastic of the car.

Get a foam cradle for this - vises are for things that are hard enought ot be abused. Metal or things that won’t be seen.

I’d agree with the above posts. In my experience I seldom use a vise for rollingstock building. Various size clamps serve my needs. If on reflection you decide you want one, I suggest you have a look at www.harborfreight.com/ their prices are unbeatable.

Good Luck
