Here’s a recent pic of my Broadway Limited DCC QSI Helm leasing loco 6388 that I easily changed the lettering to represent my Soo Line locomotive. Albeit its not a GP38, but an SD40-2 but oh well, close enough for me. I’ve also included a soo line caboose I modified and painted.

Lake States Transportation is my absolute favorite era in railroad history! Are the decals from Switch Yard, or something else?
You also need a Walthers SOO Line (Platinum Line) Soo-Milwaukee System caboose to go along with those Ugly Pumpkins (aka.Bandits) to make them stand out. The brown cabooses are nice too.

If you’re a little hesitant about weathering the body, just do the truck side frames and the fuel tank. Amazing what a difference it makes. I’ve used the airbrush and the “paint wash” method with a bristle brush.
Rule of thumb: All strokes are vertical. Even for a klutz like me, either method was a piece of cake[;)]
There was a bunch of ex-MILW SD40-2s that looked like that before the Soo returned them. IIRC, only one MILW SD40-2 got repainted into Soo colors (6309 after repaint). The rest looked like your model.
That’s good to know, so its actually plausable then that this model existed. Except for the wrong numbers.
