I recently was down on the southside and decided to make a visit down to the junction in Park Forest/Matteson. There was some pretty good action down there and I got to see a couple of real nice trains go by. Some further exploration confirmed a small yard down in what I think was Park Forest…I think the yard belongs to EJ&E since it is on their tracks, however the trains coming through were UP. Obvoiusly UP has trackage rights on the line…does that also mean they have rights to use the yard for their cars as well? Thanks
I suspect that most of the UP trains you’d see down there would be auto-rack (and possibly auto parts) trains being interchanged with CN at Griffith, Indiana. They wouldn’t need EJ&E’s local yards or facilities to handle that, other than possibly at Griffith.
