Does anyone know where I might obtain parts for the Athearn Genesis Lt. Mikado 2-8-2? Athearn doesn’t list any on their web site that I can see.
I bought an undecorated and want to replace the front of the smokebox with the B&O version which has a different headlight and the B&O nameplate.
You’ll have to email or call Athearn directly, but don’t hold your breath. Athearn has been pretty bad about supporting their new steam releases, in terms of new parts.
Your best bet would be to ask other modelers if they’d be willing to trade smokebox fronts with you. Either that, or buy a new smokebox front from Bowser.

I was missing some add on parts from my 2-8-2 so I e-mailed Athearn. They got back to me and told me that they would send them to me, no charge. Now, that was before they got bought out by Horizon. It’s still worth talking to them directly but Ray’s idea is a good one. How do you like your Mike?

I bought several Athearn 2-8-2s via mail order and accidentally got one with the wrong pilot. I wanted to swap out the pilot, so I contacted Athearn, but they said they did not have any of those parts available.
Call Athearn, there isn’t much pattern to which parts they have and which ones they don’t, but they are helpful on the phone. If that doesn’t work, buy one with the smokebox front you want on ebay, swap them, and then resell the one you bought. Worked for me, and I made ten bucks, and it was the easiest kitbash I ever accomplished. BTW, as far as I can tell, the only two with the high headlight were the B&O version and the one undec. Wi***heir Pacific had been available with a high headlight too.
