Parts needed...

My Lionel Scale J took a tumble and I am looking for the following part…

This is how the part is mounted on the opposite side. I checked Lionel’s website and I’ll call tomorrow but I thought I’d post here too. I don’t know the technical name. It mounts to the front chamber where the piston would go in and out of. I assume I can use either one from the 611 or 606. Without it I have a $1200 paper weight unless I can have it fabricated.

Hi Marty,
Sorry to see that happen to you.
I was just doing some thinking. Recently I had my eyeglasses repaired and the shop I had it done at uses a very small welder sometimes.
I am wondering if something like your piece could be welded at such a shop in your area.
Just an idea if such a faciity exists where you live
If not I hope Lionel has the part.
I have two old Lionel steam engines ( about 1935) that were my Dads . A Commodore Vanderbilt and another freight steam engine, plus some passenger cars and frieght cars, all in good shape.
Together both complete trains were assesesed at about 1400 dollars sevearl yaers ago, they both run.
Best of luck to you.

Marty, If you can’t find a replacement part, see if a jeweler can either weld it or make a new one for you. Jim

Looking through the various Lionel part suppliments I think this part maybe used on othet locos as well. I hope so. The worse part of this I was doing some plumbing above the layout and I moved this engine so it wouldn’t get damaged. It rolled of the chair I put it on and got damaged anyways.

Marty, There’s a thread a little further down about excellent customer service from Lionel Wednesdays - Fridays. It wouldn’t hurt to give them a call. Jim

It’s on my “To Do” list. Thanks! As I wrote earlier I was doing plumbing as a couple of valves were corroding above the layout. I was changing them out to prevent damage. I moved trains to prevent damage. So what did I do…I damaged it!

It’s a crosshead guide, if that’s any help in finding one.

Thanks Bob that’s a big help.

Good luck on the plumbing. Hope you don’t have any “floods”. [since over layout] [:O]

Well good news. Lionel has the part, although in the form of the “Steam chest assembly”. $35 later and I got what I need and some spare parts to boot. I’m a happy camper. The gentleman, Tony I believe was more than helpful. Thnaks Lionel!

Now tell us how the plumbing job is going/went. [?]

Bob stole my thunder, I finally had something I knew the answer to and Bob answered first. Anyway, glad you were able to track down the part. Perhaps you can use the damaged ones as a display for a engine repair facility on your layout. I have amassed several junk items that will hold a static place on the layout.

The plumbing went peachy. Finished up this morning after I pouted all last night over the J. Installed 2 new ball valves so hopefully they’ll be good until I’m outta there! I’ll have to redo some of the layout as I am sure I probably played havoc on the scenery under the tarp?
