Passenger Cars You Want, But Are Not Made In HO Scale

To the person who necro’d this topic. Keep in mind the people who have posted here in the past may not even be on the forum any longer since this topic was active 6-7 years ago.

At least up to Hurricane Andrew, Gold Coast Railroad Museum had the General Myer on site, along with Magellan and several other cars that, at various times, saw Presidential service. I’m fairly sure the Myer remained there afterward, although it and Magellan had to undergo some repair from hurricane damage. The Magellan underwent a full exterior restoration. Ample documentation, including measured drawings was essential to repairing the cars, so it’s gotta still be available somewhere.

Since the hurricane I’ve been dying to add a good HO Magellan to my collection, because I supervised the restoration of the Museum and its collection after the storm. It has strong sentimental value to me, and its value as a historic object is testified to by the fact that Magellan became the first National Historic Landmark in all of South Florida (all other claims to the contrary being erroneous). I have two of the completely inappropriate, wholly inaccurate Magellans offered by manufacturers who made no effort at all to replicate the car or anything close to it. But knowing their inaccuracy I’m almost ashamed to run them on my layout. They could never have the impact, or meaning of a model of the real thing.

One manufacturer of pretty expensive cars did issue a Magellan years ago. Now and then one shows up for sale, but rarely and they cost a fortune. Of course, they’re wonderfully accurate. I’m surprised no other manufacturer has tried to put out a less expensive but decent model, because interest in a product like that is so evident.
