Does anyone have any pictures of UP 4-6-6-4 Challengers pulling passenger services? I’ve only ever seen one photo that someone posted on Reddit.
I expect most of the pictures to be ‘main trains’ (troop trains for WWII or Korea). These might be substantial consists of troop sleepers. Note that it was technically illegal to photograph military movements during wartime, so there may be comparatively little actual documentation.
I have never seen one and I doubt it.

Yes, there are a few in Mr. Kratvilles’s “The Challenger Locomotives” book.
Well, I’ll be. I don’t have the book, but I found this in Wikipedia:
They operated over most of the Union Pacific system, primarily in freight service, but a few were assigned to the Portland Rose and other passenger trains.

Nice!
Brings back memories of 2003, north of Pine Bluff through into Missouri with 3985 and a very similar consist. I should have asked if there were steam and signal lines… but I don’t think there were at the time.
Part of that was the fun of seeing every t’meeting’ rain headed by a unit in Southern Pacific paint. Take that, Uncle Pete!
that is nice
Thanks! I’ll see if my library has it.
Cool! Ive got a Genesis 3985 Coming in the mail. Got an extra coal tender so I can replicate the 1980s excursions, pre oil conversion.
Yes, but its from the 2006 run. The most recent ones have been delayed for years.
Gotta be worth the wait. That is one big, beautiful beast, er, locomotive.

AFAIK, they’re the same molds. The only difference is a new decoder. Since I run DC, thats negligible to me.
www.worldcat.org indicates that the Jefferson Library in St. Louis and the DeGolyer Library at SMU in Dallas, both of which have considerable ‘other’ specialist tailroad collections, have copies.
Amazon has one for $35 plus the usual $3.99 shipping – I consider the book ‘worth’ that.
I found a used one on Ebay for ≈$15 saved for later!
14 passenger cars?
How long does “saving” on Ebay last?
