I don’t know who made the statement on behalf of the National Association of Railroad Passengers, but as of the day of Obama’s appearance in St. Paul, longtime President/CEO and former Executive Director Ross Capon no longer held that top job. Larry Scott took over as Acting President pending selection of a successor. Capon will serve as a temporary advisor with the title, “Assistant to the President” until his permanent departure from NARP.
Gene: The comment above comes from a blog on NARP’s web site written by Sean Jeans Gail. http://narprail.org/news/narp-blog/2512-president-obama-reveals-4-year-19-billion-proposal-for-trains As for who the president of NARP is; please note the use of the word “will” in the sentences about Ross Capon and Larry Scott.
The NARP was correct in it’s assessment on the President but understands that the current ruling party in the House has no vision or intelligence when it comes to needed future priorities.
What the King wants he gets.
Well said, Rodney! By the way, there are a number of pro-Amtrak Republicans in the house.

The only thing of Obama’s agenda I support is the passenger rail and infrastructure projects. To bad the original stimulus package had to much pork and not more infrastructure projects. Given the sad history of this administration this will probably be all talk and no action. We must create a non political funding source.

He has talked P. rail B4 & then nothing happens. GOP still has no stomach for P. rail so I don’t expect much out of this. I think we may be seeing Amtrak’s death spiral.

Mr. Davis: learn to keyboard, please, in English, if possible.
Pro- rail Republicans in the House? I’ll not one of them are Tea -partiers. The only Republican I recall was the former senator Trent Lott. Tommy Thompson was a rail supporter but as I recall Tommy turned against passenger rail once the Tea-party movement commenced
I hear all this talk, but when I read TRAINS I see passenger trains being halted by freight congestion and last time I took the Cascades from Portland to Seattle it kept stopping for freight congestion – on a segment enirely two-track two bidirectional mainlines, with improvements largely paid for by state subsidies. All sounds like bovine exceretia to me.

It’s so sad when you consider that for over 43 years now that Amtrak and a rational/balanced transportation policy has been igored by both party’s presidents. And now with huge defecits and entitlement costs (including Obamacare) and no debt, tax & entitlement reform likely, I’m afraid that Amtrak and transportation policy will still be ingored and live only on a shoestring budget. It is insane and I’m afraid the country will not wake up before it to late!
Where’s the Goosenut with his political anti-Amtrak rant???
We are seeing the last long distance passenger trains in this country and if anyone believe that anything postive will come out of this latest round of pontificating by a pres. that does that best, then lets talk about a bridge or two that know of that are for sale.
