Patch repaired cars (and locos)

I’ve seen pics of real cars with masses of rust and weathering but also new doors and / or panels… also renewed car marks (sometimes where the original has been graffiteed over)… I’ve not seen this modelled though… does anyone do it?

Similarly locos with new doors… unless they’re Santa Fe when the shops seem to take a delight in juggling the doors round to make new road names… anyone done this?..pics?

One I’ve seen here has been a diagonal stripe painted on the outside of a hopper where it would appear that a new internal hopper floor plate has been welded in and the work must have damaged the external paint. Strange thing was they’d only repainted with primer (grey) and not finished the job before putting the car back into service.

Maybe no one taught these mechanics how to use an airbrush?

In Railroad Model Craftsman, Modelr Mike Rose does several bash jobs like you describe. They are very interesting and suggest you take a gander at some back issiues.

roundhouse makes ho scale models of repaints such as x whatever rr lettering but new rr reporting marks and road number also they have a conrail 50 ft gon with a black patch and new reporting marks road number. i know because i have some of these. you might also want to get a car weather it to your tatse then mask off around the reporting marks then gloss cote that area only then use microscale decal film and make your own reporting marks. i did this with a roundhouse up bulkhead flat that a friend weathered for me, however i used microscale emd number board decals then relettered the car for the Turtle Creek Central and it came out real good

Oh, sure…those are some of the most fun car modeling projects!

Re-painted panels because of repairs or to cover grafitti, mismatched box car doors, and re-painted reporting marks just add more visual interest to that car rolling by.

I’ve also seen pics of some Rock Island locos where they used doors from different units to come up with some strange spellings!

I repatch my cars to there current names got a chessie grain hooper weathered and put csxt over the old B&O markings.
