I read December’s Scenery Step by Step patching out on freight cars. Awesome job on Cody’s part! I bought a Bachman Silver Series Covered hopper in the Erie Lackawanna heritage it has a logo on the far right, the words, “Erie Lackawanna” in the middle, and of course, the reporting marks from Erie Lackawanna. Would I patch out all these things, or leave one or the other? And if so, what things should I patch out?
You’ll want to paint out the EL reporting markings at the bare minimum. Whether you paint out the billboard Erie Lackawanna & Diamond are up to you. Sometimes they were painted over. Sometimes not. What’s a really neat trick, if you can do it, is to have the previous herald bleeding through the patch.
Thanks for the advice, sounds hard but possible, I could take a close color in acylic paints and use that to fade the logo out, not intialy what you suggested, but I may do that.
Ya the official “name” of the car is the reporting marks, so that would have to be changed. The rest would be optional.
Virnex makes “no need to trim” decals in various stripes and shapes, you may find patching the existing lettering with a rectangular decal might be easier than painting.
Patching out refers to when a freightcar’s reporting marks and number are painted over and a new owner’s reporting marks and number applied in it’s place. This is cheaper than repainting the car.
For example, the Scoular reporting marks have been patched out to show the car’s new ownership by NDYX.
EDIT: Darn, this forum stretched my photo beyond its original dimensions!
