CSX ran a string of approximately 60 or so (give or take) empty hoppers to the PBS Coal Cambria Mine load-out earlier today. This is only the second time the line has seen activity since restoration work completed last fall. The line had previously been out of service for roughly 6 years, again give or take a couple of years.
The line, now owned by PBS, was the former CSX → Chessie → B&O line that runs from Friedens, PA to Shanksville, PA. It was nice to see activity on the line, espeically with a pair of CSX widecabs (564 & 722) on the point - the line is only allowed 6 axel, steerable truck units. One of the hoppers in the consist today was a former D&RG with a “Mainline through the Rockies” logo painted on it.
Although I got some photos, they’re not exactly what I wanted. The line is a single track that mostly runs through the woods which makes it a great place for some scenic shots - that and the rural countryside it cuts across. Here’s a link to photos if anyone is interested:
I tried to e-mail you this info. All the e-mails to your new address keep getting bounced back when I send. Not sure what’s going on there. I figured I’d post here so you could see what’s happening.
It was a real good site seeing those strings of coal hoppers sitting in the mine “yard”. Brought back a memory of the first (and only) time I ever saw cars there. What a feeling!!
After I post this I’m going to head out and see if I can’t get some shots along the line. We got a little more snow overnight and were getting some good flurries as I type this.
I took last Thurday off from work since that was when the coal train was supposed to run. Since they delayed it and I was off, I went over to Sand Patch and got some good snow pics. I even got one of D703 (the S&C local) in the heavy snow that was coming down in Rockwood.
Here’s the links to those picstures. Got a nice winter shot of Amtrak’s Capital Ltd coming into Garrett. (My favorite photo.)
…Really like your Amtrak shot above Brian…Believe you are standing on the old iron vehicle bridge at the western edge of Garrett looking west at the eastbound Amtrak gliding by…I took some pic’s from that bridge this past summer as we were out in that area.
