Will an Athearn Genesis DDa40X go through a #5 turnout with no problems, or is a #6 recommended as the minimum for that specific locomotive? I am wanting to use #8’s but simply don’t have the room.
If you don’t have room for #8s, you absolutely don’t have room for a monster loco. David B
A #5 turnout has a minimum radius in it ov 26". The Athearn website recommends a minum radius of 28" for that loco. For proper operation you will need #6 turnouts. It MIGHT squeak by on #5s but it probably wouldn;t be satisfactory. It’s a big loco and it needs a big layout, if 28" is the recommended minimum, you really probbaly ought to have 30" radius as a minimum, and #6 turnouts.The #5’s are fine for 50 foot and less cars, and smaller locos, so save them for the yards and industrial sidings where the big monsters don;t go.
