I’m posting in search of confirmation that the PECO code 83 turnouts, with the internal center spring, are compatible generally with commercial switch machines, tortoises and similar. I like the idea of using a 1:1 scale finger to get me up and running a bit sooner, but I don’t want to preclude future improvements.
Sorry, but the answer is probably “No” to that question.
The spring is unique to Peco turnouts. It works very well, and keeps the points against the stock rails, but it requires more of a “kick” than other turnouts to move the points over. With the spring installed, the Peco is only really compatable with the Peco switch machine.
Some Tortoise users remove the spring, but this must be done before installing the turnout. Some others say they have had success using a much thicker wire between the Tortoise and the points.
A Peco machine is best installed before mounting the turnout, since it connects directly to the underside of the turnout.
Mr. B, are the new code 83 turnouts made differently as regards the spring installation? I have a few of the code 100 and you can definitely remove and/or loosen the tension of that spring with the turnout installed.
Remove the centering spring if you’re going to use a Tortoise. There are some tabs that can be straightened so the small plate that covers the centering spring can be removed.
Unless you have some type of nippers with extremely thin jaws, there’s not enough open space to clip the centering spring while in place.
So, we’re saying that the code 83 PECO centering spring assembly is built differently than the code 100, is that correct?
Thanks MB This researching beginner is really, truly glad he asked !!! Bob
I’ve only got Code 100 Peco turnouts on my layout, so I can’t say for sure if it’s possible to clip the springs on Code 83 after installation.
If you are planning on doing this, I’d recommend getting one Tortoise and installing it before you fasten down the rest of the turnouts. Certainly, you’re going to want to drill the hole for the wire from the Tortoise before you put the track down. The experience of installing one Tortoise will give you a much better idea of how to install the remaining turnouts so that you can retrofit more Tortoises later.
Hi
I have Peco Code 83 turnouts and Tortoises. Remove the spring. Simply turn over the turnout and using a small screwdriver or a compass point simply flip out the spring. The mechanism will then become loose. I use the wire that comes with the Tortoise machine bent to shape according to the template that is printed on the Tortoise instructions.
All my Peco 83 turnouts have Tortoises and they work brilliantly!
Hope this helps.
Barry
I also have Peco code 83 turnouts with tortoises. I have removed the springs in some and left them in others. Frankly, it doesn’t seem to make a big difference. I’ll admit the ones with springs tend to snap a little, but the wire from the tortoise seems to keep them from completely snapping in either direction like they do out of the box. I do use slightly thicker wire than they recommend though. I think it might be .039, but I could be wrong.
