Peco N scale Code 55 Track questions

So, I looked online for Peco Code 55 N scale track templates, and one company called www.sodigi.com has them. I printed them out, they were life size (well, scale model life size [:p]) and planned my layout using them. However, when I went to price them online I had trouble. I want to use the code 55 (which I know is still code 80 rail, just sunk in) electrofrog turnouts. The problem is this: Southern Digital called them “small,” “medium,” and “large” radius turnouts, and that is what I have heard in the past regarding the nomenclature for Peco turnouts. But when I went to buy them at Standard Hobby, and when I looked at Walthers, they had Peco listed as #4, #6, #8, and so on.

  1. Did Peco change its naming system from “small / medium / large” to using actual frog numbers?

  2. For all planning purposes, is a #4 equivelant (about) to a “small,” a #6 equivelant to a “medium,” and so on? I can shift stuff around a bit if they are close, but if a #6 is equal to a “small” or other big differences then I need templates for the new system.

  3. Everyone understand? I know I have had some weird questions lately regarding this, but N scale is new to me so I thought I better ask. Thanks in advance for all your help! [:)]

  1. As far as I know they are still “small, medium, large” Peco N scale are not true numbered turnouts.

  2. That sounds about right.

The sizes are the same-ish in HO a medium is about a #6

Ken.

  1. No, they are like shirts. Small, medium and large.
  2. Some places refer to them as #4, #6 and #8. I suspect the numbers are close but not exact. As long as you can shift things around a little, you should be okay.
  3. I can’t speak for everyone, but I understand. [:D]

Thanks guys. Now, does anyone have a good suggestion for a place online to purchase them? I am currently living in a town without a hobby shop that carries a good line of them, so I am not worried about not giving them my business. Any leads? Is standard hobby the place to go, or somewhere else? Thanks.

Cherry creek hobbies is the cheapest I think.

TexNrails

Thanks guys.

I’ve been working under the assumption that Peco code 55 turnouts are: small= #4; medium=#6; and large=#8.

I have had good luck buying from Brooklyn Loco Works (NY) and N Scale Supply (CO)

Yeah, however Texnrails (link above in other post) has #4 switches for under $10 each. Cannot beat the price.
