Someone once described the merger of the Pennsylvania and the New York Central as being akin to two drowning men grasping at each other in a futile attempt to stay afloat.

Someone else described it as a marriage made in Hell, where the bride wore black.

Re the Penn Central 1974 movie: This was written up in one of Trains Editor David P. Morgan’s editorials in the same time frame, esp. the opening scene and the one with the switch engine emitting that huge cloud of black smoke over the yard.
