Pennsy T1 Assembly

I saw a Trains news article that the new Pennsy T1 is going to be assembled by the Dennison, OH group. I’ve not heard anything about them. Can they handle a project of this size? I would’ve thought that someone like the Midwest group out of Silvis or Age of Steam would’ve been better.

According to the T1 Trust YouTube channel, a new facility will be constructed in partnership with the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum. They have secured a $1.7 million USDA grant to build a brand-new 60-foot by 200-foot locomotive and passenger car restoration shop. More details in the video.

That is one ugly looking steam locomotive, never understood the fascination with some of the PRR designs.

I agree. What’s funny is that the PRR is my favorite late steam/early diesel road. That’s mainly because of the area it served and the massiveness of their yards and facilities. Their locomotive fleet was only exceptional because of its size.

What made the T1 look so weird was the aerodynamic casting put onto it that covered most of the locomotive itself. Basically it was a rigid 4-4-4-4 simple expansion locomotive or a 4-8-4 with twice the cylinders on it. They had very good horsepower but very slippery under power unless the engineers were paying attention with the heavier trains.

There’s multiple reports of these things breaking 100 to 110 mph without straining them. There’s several reports of them doing 120mph plus and not even close to maximum speed.

The T1 trust is planning to see just what she’s capable of doing on the high-speed test loop in Pueblo Colorado at the AAR testing facility after she’s built.

Not AAR/TTCI any more; it’s now MxV.
