William , My guess is that Iowa or some other Midwestern state would take the prize for most abandoned miles. Iowa was criss-crossed with light density branch lines and numerous parallel mainlines ( count the number of competing lines between Chicago, Omaha, Minneapolis and Kansas City in the golden age of railroading ), not to mention interurbans. I suspect that Ohio, Illinois and Indiana also rank prominently.
What state has the most abandoned (standard- and narrow-gauge) rail lines, mileage-wise, in the US? I would guess PA. Just curious.

Here’s a map of the Iowa abandonments, see for yourself.
According to a Trains article several years ago, South Dakota has lost 58% of all trackage that was ever laid down. We haven’t lost any more since then though.
Allegheny Eastern (Genesee and Wyoming) will be upgrading the yard in Warren, PA to accommodate increased business from United Refining in Warren. The article I saw also mentioned potential increased shipments owing to the Marcellus Shale natural gas prospecting (fracking sand, pipe, etc.)
I’m sure that Hawaii has lost well over 90% of its mileage. As far as I know there are only 12 original miles of Hawaiian rail in existence. It won’t come close to the total mileage of other states, I’m sure, but percentage-wise, they likely lead.
