Where can I find a listing of engines, both steam and diesel, that were used on the PRR from approximately 1920 to 1964. I am currently designing my new HO layout and would like to use the correct period engines and freight / passenger cars. The area of interest is presently the eastern part of Pennsylvania so any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time on the forum so if there was a previous link on this subject, I am unaware of it.
Thanks
The most compact source is Staufers Pennsy Power ! , 2, and 3. About $75 each. This is an almost endless topic as PRR had at least one of just about everything. Steamers were pretty much unique to the PRR.
Try this link to the PRR Technical & Historical Society website and then check out the Philadelphia chapter. I’ve been using this and the Reading RR’s counterpart website to learn a lot about both railroads’ rosters.
If you are going to try and be as prototypical as possible then you should consider purchasing a reference of some type. Since you are interested in diesels I would recommend Staufers Pennsy Power Two as a necessity and a good starting point. The reason you will need it is the PRR did not assign numbers to classes of engines. they assigned them to Divisions. When they purchased say GP9’s (348 in total) they were numbered all over the map. Stauffer lists all the numbers and stats as well as having many pictures for reference.
