I seem to remember reading that Union Pacific interchange traffic to NS and CSX is an almost 50/50 split and a reason why Uncle Pete’s recent management hasn’t been particularly keen on a Transcontinental Merger…
I wonder what percentage of doublestack traffic is “landbridged” containers. I would suspect the trend may be for that business to decline somewhat with the expansion project for the Pananma canal as well as more “round-the-horn” liner service from Asian ports…
Another reason that their has not been transcontinetal mergers is that the STC wants competition. A lot of shipprs hsve files complaints with the STC about shipping costs to the STC where there is only one railroad to serve them. UP was forced to pay back shippers millions of dollars in shipping costs last year.
Just finished reading L. Stanley Crane’s address to the Newcomen Society. He states that CR had actually been in negotiations with Sante Fe for an end to end merger when SP played its full hand and snatched the Indian away from the Crooked Worm. (Stanley Crane the President of CR in the early 80’s)
