Hi! I have a question about the Pennsylvania RR. Did the PRR ever use RS-3s in passenger service? If they did it was most likely commuter service. Does anyone out there know the answer? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
Yes they did. The famous hammer head RS3 was used in commuter service. None as far as I know has been used on Named trains. Most were dual service commuter and freight hauling. The PRR designation is AS16m and AS16ms. A is for ALCO. S is for shifter. 16 is the horsepower times 100. Little m is multiple unit capable and little s is for steam generator equipped.

Judging by pics, RS-3s were the usual power on Pittsburgh-area passenger locals (which expired in 1964). 1950s Trains had a pic of an RS-3 on a Harrisburg-Buffalo (?) train.
