Just was wondering what you folks thing about Resistance Soldering tools.
Are these tools better to use, lets say for track work (rail joiners etc) then plain soldering irons?

I have one, but it can be a fine line between soldering and an arc welder if you are not careful. It has such a large capacity, you can burn things up very easy.
Other may use it for this purpose, but it can really get out of hand.
I really prefer an adjustable Weller solder unit. Temp is adjustable for different uses, I have done all sorts of work with it and never had a problem. Inclding soldering track.
I have never tried one myself, but I know a couple people that bought them and wished they hadn’t wasted there money.
I am an electronics technician and I use my gun (Weller 230 watt) more then any other iron. But I make my own tips out of heavy guage copper wire and file a point on the end.
A resistance unit is waaaaay overkill for doing track work or electronics… If you’re going to build brass models they’re great, much better for most things than an iron but for the cost vs. usage I’d think about it a lot- or build one yourself, there are a couple places online that show you how by using a little (6 amp) automotive batery charger.
