Perma-scene from Permacraft Products?

Greetings,

I am doing some scenery now, and noticed that I might need some more Perma-scene. I bought a box of this stuff years ago. I thought I heard through the grapevine at that time it was no longer produced, because it contained asbestos. I still have the old box and I noticed on the top cover that it indicates ‘non asbestos product’. So now I am confused. But at any rate, what would be a good substitute? 2 qualities I especially liked about Perma-scene. 1 - if you made too much, just let it dry and put it back in the package. You can always add water to it again later and re-use it. 2 - it is granular and looks like small rocks. It not a smooth paste that ends up looking like plaster or hydrocal would.

So with those 2 qualities in mind, what would be a good substitute for when I run out?

Thx,
Mark

Perma-scene has been gone for years.
There really isn’t a similar product available that can be reused the way you mention. The two common products used in a similar way today are Sculptamold and ground goop, popularized by Lou Sassi.
Ground goop recipe:
1 part Active Celluclay
1 part Vermiculite
3/4 part white glue
3/4 part earth brown paint
1-1 1/2 ounces Lysol concentrate to protect against mold in leftover goop
Mix everything with water to the consistancy of oatmeal

Sculptamold is a plaster of paris product that gives you a lumpy surface, but can easily be used to smooth the contours of layout scenery.

The goop will keep in a sealed container. Sculptamold has to be used up before it hardens.
