Permanently rerouting Intermodals on BNSF?

I live on the BNSF coal line about 60 miles outside lincoln, nebraska. (this is the line that goes through lincoln, grand island, ravenna, north platte, and eventually into wyoming.) I have not seen an intermodal on this line for a good 4 months or so. They usually have 2 or so a day, and BOEING ships their aircraft fusalages on Intermodals, but lately they’ve been on freights or on special trains. Do you know where the intermodals are now running? also why the reason is? Maybe MOOKIE will know? Thanks for any info. you guys can give me.

And PS, it’s been a long time since i’ve been on here, it’s good to be back !

I was just wondering where ANY freight was on this last Saturday! They ran a lot of coal, both east and south, so I know those lines are open, but nary a freight train went by. And I haven’t seen that westbound Boeing lately, and it always ran on Sat morning.

I chalked it up to maybe just repair work in the area. We had some rail on cars in the north yard by the depot this last weekend. They were moving it around, so maybe they were getting ready to send it. Unless Mudchicken knows something, I probably can’t help you except to tell you what I have or haven’t seen.

Welcome back!

Maybe the freights are now going thru your area when you are not watching them. [:o)][:p]

That’s nearly impossible because my school is located right next to the tracks, my wrokplace you can over see the tracks and hear when one is coming, and when i hang out at nights i am not far from the tracks, I would have seen something.

So there too!

Maby the BNSF had rerouted them to another route.
Allan.

yeah but where?

North Platte?? I don’t know the territory but according to my U.S. Railroad Traffic Atlas the BNSF doesn’t go to North Platte.
What would be the westbound destination for intermodal traffic on that line?

A few months ago, BNSF announced that they were eliminating several intermodal service lanes between the Pacific Northwest and the lower midwest (KC, St L, Memphis). The problem for them is that these trains ran through the coal network which resulted in poor performance for the intermodal trains and negative capacity impacts on the coal routes, which pay better returns to the RR.

Maybe there running via La Crosse, WI.

I think dblstack nailed it. I looked in a 1976 Official Guide and this was an important KC-Pacific Northwest route.

I know the link below is a mess, but it links to the BNSF.com website. Its a spreadsheet showing lanes from Portland or Seattle that were eliminated.

BNSF intermodal to/from the Omaha area now operates to/from the Pacific Northwest via Denver, Cheyenne, and Casper.
BNSF intermodal to/from the Kansas City area now operates to/from the Pacific Northwest via Galesburg, La Crosse, Staples, and Havre.

Doesn’t the BNSF run intermodals from Los Angeles to Chicago via the “Transcon” line anymore? A few years ago (6?), my wife and I stayed at the Knox Station Bed and Breakfast at Knoxville, IL and all that the BNSF ran thru there were intermodal stack trains. It was actually a little boring, seeing stack train after stack train. I haven’t seen any ads for that B & B lately. Anyone know if it’s still being operated as a Bed and Breakfast? That was the old Santa Fe line that ran thru there. Wm.

The BNSF runs nearly 100 trains a day on the transcon. A high number are TOFC and COFC/ stack trains. Last week I was on the line and saw around 20 intermodal trains in 8 hrs.

Where’s good viewing for BNSF’s Southern Transcon? I live in Chicago and so can head west, north or south, but I would like to get out in the country for a good viewing of trains and some photography. Do TOFC trains still run through Streator (that’s a good deal south of Mendota).
