Pet industry to lobby for carrying pets on Amtrak trains

Bad idea. Very bad idea.

About time, hope they mean the 4 legged kind and not snakes.

Way back when, my family traveled, with our dogs, mostly on the "Gull’, from NYC (GCT) to Sydney, NS. Routing: NYC, NH,
B&M, MEC, CP, and CNR. No problema! We were responsible for ‘walking’ them, at designated station stops, and feeding them. We had access to the baggage cars, where they were transported, to feed and water the pets. I wouldn’t mind riding in an Amtrak car with a dog (except a Pomeranain, Yorkie, or a Schnauzer). No Siamese cats, please!!!

If someone has had a cat or dog for years, are they going to want to let that cat or dog be stuck by itself for 3 to 8 hours in a separate car, just like a suitcase full of clothes. Not likely. Not too many people would want to let their cat or dog out of their sight for more than a half a minute on a passenger train.

I was recently in Germany and Switzerland, and frequently saw pets (mostly dogs) and bikes on trains–both things that Amtrak does not do well (or at all, in the case of pets).

The Europeans are getting smarter. They have high speed and now even pets! Maybe if we close tax loopholes on corporations such as GE who pays 11% and rich guys like Romney who paid 15%, we can afford to have a first rate rail system that also can take pets. Lets call it Pet-trak.

There are enough animals on the trains already without also adding pets.

I hear the giraffe is the new “in” animal for kids. I’m sure Sen. Schumer (D-NY) will come up with the funds to raise the clearances in GCT so that giraffes can travel the line. I’d approve of pigs: they are naturally housebroken. BTW, what is a “Brabant”? Seems that all European trains allow pets in the passenger cars. How dey do dat? Rocket science?

This whole discussion reminds me of that old Three Stooges episode (with Shemp as the third one) made around 1948 called “Hold that Lion” about a lion being loose on the “Cannonball Express.” This one is usually not shown now because of some racial sterotyping present. Now, cats are animals that seem to be GOP (strong defense–when not d-clawed, family values carrying the young, and self reliance–for a bath, no trip down to the “Dirty Dog” wash, I’ll do it myself) so they may want to bat the Amtrak train off the ole’ HO track if not allowed on board soon!

Ever flow on a plane? Carriers allow them in the cabin in a carrier or as baggage in a crate. Alaska Airlines even allows then without the carrier in the cabin. The airlines charge extra but pet owners are willing to pay the extra.

I’m all for it and we would travel AMTRAK much more than we do if we could bring the kids along.

Just another example of how some in Congress are trying to micromanage Amtrak and at the same time, please contributors from one industry or another. Congress should be enacting legislation that supports a national balanced transportation system including passenger rail and not be wasting their time with this sort of foolishness.

Why is the pet food industry lobbying? The pet will eat the same amount of food…whether it passes or not. Whats in it for them??
