I just had to post this one. I just finished putting a new Athearn boxcar together…and was annoyed that it wouldn’t fit in the box with the couplers on! What’s up with that?
Why not put it on your track, instead of back in the box[?]
I thought about that, but the layout is at my grandmother’s house… 50 miles south of me.
The boxes they are shipped in are shipping boxes, not storage tote boxes. A -Line sells storage / tote containers for HO equipment. Lots of stuff doesn’t fit back in its shipping box after assembly, charcoal grills, model semis, motorcycles, and cake mixes come to mind. In fact MOST items do not fit back in their shipping box. BTW the new preassembled Atherns do fit back in their box. If it bugs you that much buy them.

Well for some cars putting the car in the box on an angle helps. Another solution, which I have used, is to go to a cigar store and ask for cigar boxes. They are nice and roomy (you can fit two or even three cars in one box) and the only downside is your cars will smell like a cigar.
As to the suggestion to leave the couplers off – actually if you anticipate long term storage that is good advice as some of the new (non Kadee) plastic couplers have a “memory” if they are bent one way or the other for a long time. Removing one coupler will probably leave enough room but you still need to be concerned about this plastic springs memory issue.
