My dad has a train set under his Christmas tree every year and recently married a woman who has cats. The cat can’t seem to stop attacking/derailing the train. Is there any sort of clear plastic tube or tunnel that is available to buy to keep a train from being derailed by a cat? I would like to buy it for my dad for Christmas if there is such thing. If I have to buy a whole new electric train set to do so, that works too.
Welcome Kyntathia, we also have cats, but they are afraid of the trains… I don’t know if a cat can derail a Lionel 0 gauge steamer, but you could use plastic tunnels…
It’s, as far as I know not for sale, apart from a shelf-like type to display trains in, but that doesn’t include curves and mostly they are sealed at both ends too. Besides that, if the train has a smoke unit, it would be visible for a few loops. Afterwards it will be very cloudy in the tunnel…
I think it’s best to shield the whole set off with normal plexiglas (acryllic glas), which can be bought in any DIY shop, any size you want. The train runs behind a window, like a showroom layout. The cats can’t get near to the trains, and every other aspect of it stay’s the same…

For those who might not know, “DIY” is British for “do it yourself”.
DIY in english means Do It Yourself and then hire a professional!

I believedann had the best solution for that problem.
I’ve had pets most of my life,and have had all those problems
myself. cherokee woman and myself have that problem under
control right now. The Kid-a-mals don’t get to come close to the
layout;it’s in another room-closed doors.[:)]

Is DIY british?? How do you guys call a diy shop?
(some suggestions: Home improvement, Bob the builder, Sledge Hammer, Screw you, Elecric power tools and first aid, be nailed…)
Probably a hardware store, but that’s a computer shop in Great Brittain…
The stores themselves seem to like to call themselves something like “home-improvement store”, but I’ve never heard any real person call them that. I would agree with “hardware store” as the most likely; but we really don’t have a good name for “big-box” stores like Home Depot and Lowes that distinguishes them from the much more modest and largely extinct traditional hardware stores.
The actual phrase “do it yourself” is well known here, to denote the philosophy of, well, doing it yourself, just not the abbreviation “DIY”.

Well, i don’t think you can really do anything. i had a cat who was intrepid when it came to my trains. for awhile he would even sleep on the layout. this layout is about 3 ft off the floor so i was forced to put a gaurd rail system up to keep hi from knocking the trains to the cold concrete. it was rather funny, i have some astro turf as grass and had all the kitty hair stuck in it from him. the only thing i could say is cage the cats while the trains are in operation. i actually named the town after him, maxington.
