Petrus Feed And Seed

Anouther HO scratchbuilt, inspired by imagination. I’m not happy with the weathering, but can;t put my finger on whats wrong. Any suggestions ?

Thanks for looking

Weathering is a matter of taste as well as technique. We may not have the same tastes.

Even though the signs are weathered, they look to bright. The metal building looks fine to me, but the back building has too much rust on the doors. It’s a thriving business and people look right at those doors when they drive in. It’s too run down. The door to the left of the rusty doors look perfect. I also think you were too heavy handed with the rust on the Wayne seed building.

Parts of the roof look clean, parts look dirty. It would have been better is an individual panel or two looked clean, like it was recently replaced.

You may be like me, Unclebutch. Too critical of your own work.

It looks great to me. You’ve done a good job.

I would echo what Big Daddy posted relative to the doors. For me, the rust running down there is far too heavy. I have never seen that much rust from the small amount of metal in those brackets.

That rust sort of takes away from the rest of the weathering. I’d have to get it under control before I could judge the rest of the model.

All in all, it’s a great model and I wish I were doing that quality work.

That’s a nice looking facility, but I have to agree with the previous posters: a little too heavy on the rust effects, and perhaps a little too much dirt on the walls, especially at left, in the last photo. That roof overhang would shield that wall rather well, unless a lot of weather came from that side.
Dirt and rust usually comes from a specific source or collects in places where it would be pushed by wind and particularly by water.

OK, since you asked, I’ll jump in, and agree about the “rust” on the door rollers.

My biggest problem is you can "see"under the roof structures. The flashing, and counterflashing that should be there, would not allow one to see “under” such roof structures.

Overall, it looks great, like your other structures.

Yea, we’re all nit pickin’ here, but you asked for it. [swg]

Mike.

Yes I did, and I’m taking notes.

It seams that you can look at a thing, but not really see it. Thanks

Very true. Weathering might be the one aspect of the hobby where each of our individual tastes can be distinguished most clearly.

I grew up in the early 50s so I model the early 50s, I don’t remember very much “weathering” or rust on things back then. Times were more lax back then and I think people took the time to make things look better then than they do now days, too much going on to spend time keeping things looking good.

As a result I go very light with weathering on my layout. I remember my dad borrowing a 24’ ladder to patch a small hole made by a woodpecker near the peak of our roof in the late 40s. He was constantly doing paint touch up on our house as were many of our neighbors.

Weathering is just different to different people.

I think your scratch build is fanastic!!!

I think the weathering looks great. If you really think there is and issue it could be that red rust color, it is a bit bright, maybe try a muter rust color over the other color in a small spot to see if you like it.

Still I don’t really see anything wrong with your work! Thanks for sharing!
