Photo Too Dark?

I tried to submit the following picture to railpictures.net

It was rejected for being too dark. Any comments?

They’re right. It is a bit too dark (for RailPictures, anyway). Unless you can seriously bump up the light (you can’t, there’s already grain on the trucks and adjusting fill light will only make it worse) then they won’t take it. I don’t mind it like that, but RailPictures wants perfection…

railpictures.net likes sunlit images. This was taken on “the wrong side of the sun”. Railpictures doesn’t like perfection, just their own idea of it.

On the other side, the sun reflected on the stainless steel. It was practically blinding. The angle of this picture was the best.

Did you get a photo of the other side? May we see it?

I know what he means. There’s hardly any way to get a picture from the other side. He had to get it from the unlit side. And it appears okay on this monitor. See if you get it by them with a note that it may appear dark on some monitors. I can easily see the people in teh shadow, so it’s fine. Tell them that.

I’d have to agree that it’s too dark, especially compared to the rest of the picture (which shows bright sunlight). Too bad there wasn’t something on the dark side to provide bounce lighting (like a white station or or other building).

Unfortunately, I did not get a picture from the other side. I thought that it was too bright, so I didnt take it.

And yes, the brick station in Netcong does not reflect light at all. Also, it has a large overhang, so there is nowhere for it to bounce off anyway.

I was just gonna ask if that picture was taken at Netcong… Home to the special run trains, and the Santa Claus special. I forgot it was running.

NS3010,

Next time, fool your light meter and step into the shadow and use your flash,or open the fstop and slow the shutter spd down…

Happy hunting and Merry Christmas !

If I stepped into the shadow, the sun came up over the cars, and made it really bad, as seen here.

Ok, I see what you mean, you couldnt have got the shot you wanted standing in the shadow…I dont know what kind of camera equiptment you have but you can buy a polarizer filter(screw on type) that would reduce glare a whole lot…If you take a lot of pix of stainless steele cars it might be to your advantage to get one…Sorry, thats all I can recommend…

OH YEAH, If you take a lot of pix at this locale at this time of day shooting into the sun you should also try a neutral density filter, they come in different gratiants and will even up the light for you,but you should get the sun behind you…ALWAYS
