Photos of Big Slide on Union Pacific Shasta Route

Here’s a link to a forum with photos of the recovery of UP’s former Southern Pacific main line between Oakridge and Cascade Summit, Oregon, blocked by a mudslide on January 19:

Click on the link in the first post for numerous photos

At the next link is a good aerial shot showing the slide. The slide continues to the lower track level about 1,000 feet below, and crosses it too.

There. (I hate to cut and paste)

I can never figure out how to turn links into links.

RWM

Hit the space bar at the end of the URL.

Thanks for the links. Nice shots. Tonight’s newswire reports that 700,000 board feet of logs have been recovered and the slide volumn was 2.3 million yards. Don’t know if all of it has to be moved.

Another foolproof method I use: after pasting the link into your message, go back to the start of the link entry and type in {url}, except use the square brackets instead of the curly ones, and then at the end of the link entry, type in {/url}, again using the square brackets instead.

Space bars don’t work in Mozilla, but the brackets do. Thanks!

Seems like an awful lot of work[|(]

Those pictures are of Fields. The rail line makes a “U-Turn” through a tunnel. That tunnel is in the ridge at the top of the picture and the roadbed is in the large white stripe on the left, going upgrade out of the bottom of the picture. The large white stripe just to the right of the rail roadbed is the access road from Hwy 58. The “lower level” (the middle step in the reverse loop between Heather and Fields) is about 150 feet lower than the upper level in this photo.

It is rather surprising that this area slid since so many really bad weather events that lead to slides such as this have come down between Oakridge and Heather - a notoriously unstable area. But not at Fields. Appears to have take out the siding and covered the road and railroad just below.

Another thing that I use,

Type a word(s)…

Copy your link, Hilight your words and then click the little icon at the top center of the typing window(it looks like a little chain link), and paste the link in the URL box
