Oh crickie! Great pics.
Woa.
Imagine the forces involved to shear knuckles apart!
Thanks for the links, Railfan1.
Regarding the incident at Irvine -
Early on, I heard conflicting reports about whether the four runaway cars ran into a 1) train that was being put together, 2) train that just happened to be parked at that location, 3) train that was deliberately parked at that location, and now 4) locomotives that were deliberately parked at that location.
Does anyone know what the real scoop is on that? Would CSX have deliberately caused the accident in order to stop the runaways?
That is how I understood it at first…
I am just taking a wild guess but were the CSX units hit by tank cars full of some explosive materail such as natural gas?
That must have been a really hot fire to burn the paint off of those locomotives.
Incredible.
Happy railroading[(-D]

The pics are from this wreck. http://www.trains.com/TRC/CS/forums/1007099/ShowPost.aspx
Does anyone know if these locomotives will be saved or scraped? (CSX 151, CSX 403)
I would say they will be saved but can’t say either that or they are goners. I belive CSX rebuilt CSX 8877 which was twisted like a twig in April 2006.

All things considered there is relatively little ‘collision’ damage to the 151 and it would be eminately repairable account the collision. The fire damage persents an entirely different set of conditions and I suspect may have consigned this engine to the scrap heap.
Yeah, I wondering how bad the fire damage is to the units. That can make or break a unit post accident.
What exactly happened?
Those are incredible photos. If CSX did place the locomotives in the path, someone was obviously thinking.

I have seen several conflicting reports but I have not seen a CSX report yet. But, in a nutshell, four tankcars rolled off a siding, and hit the two NB locomotives and one freight car. Some stories I have read say that the locomotives were placed there on purpose while others say “wrong place, wrong time”. Everyone was evacuated from the area though so, no injuries.
Story I heard -
Crew on the engines radioed that they would try to ‘catch’ the cars when they heard they were running away on the Main Track. A Roadmaster overhearing that radio communication in turn radioed the crew that the cars had gone past his location at 40 MPH + and could not be caught and to get off their engines and get as far away from them as possible. The rest, as they say, is history.
I can not vouch for the truthfulness of the above.
holy shit that sucks tho how did it happen
See above posts.
CSX is a very poor run of a railroad with all these Wrecks past few weeks.[2c]
