Hello Tom,

This is the best I can do for now. It’s a photo of two Volvo graders on a 60’ flat, although not caterpillar, but I think it will work for you.

Tom,
This is the sole article citation I found at the Index of Magazines searching for a Caterpillar load:

Monon Flat Car and “Cat” Loading: Next step for realism Mainline Modeler, March 1988, page 40 ( BULLDOZER, CATERPILLAR, FLATCAR, LOAD, MON, “SWITZER, MONT”, FREIGHTCAR, MM )

At least it might give you some idea how they secured their loads in '88. Also,
you might want to look at the NMRA “Open Loads” article series in the NMRA Bulletin/Scale Rails magazine. They also have published a booklet of some of those articles. Hope this helps.

Tom,
Here’s the link for back issues of Mainline Modeler:
http://www.hundman.com/cgi-bin/estore.cgi?ct=1
Or, you can order a photocopy of the article from the NMRA’s Kalmbach Memorial Library:
http://www.nmra/org/library/
Their charge is reasonable, even if you’re not a member.
