2a did not work.

this is my first attempt at a little scene. Looks like I am going to have to learn to take better pictures.

I think thats pretty good. What you have to do is have your camera set on f22 (the f-stop). On f22 you will need the camera on a tripod to prevent shaking. You will probably have to setup lights to get the shadows just right and maybe put a filter on your camera to prevent a yellowi***int. Having an SLR also helps acheive better photo quality.
Hope this helps

Without knowing what camera he’s using, it’s hard to suggest using f/22; I assume the camera is a point and shoot digital that probably does not have the ability to stop down to f/22. Most only go to f/8 or so.
It also looks like a flash shot, due to the washed out foreground. As suggested, using house lights/floodlights can help while turning off the flash.
If the camera is a digital, then it could be set for incandescent lighting instead of using a filter.
Here’s a shot I took using s digital SLR (Canon Rebel) set at f/22 and set for incandescent lighting:

Thank you. Its the cheapest digital ever made. I will try with some house lights and no flash.
