Yes, Rambo is thinking of Grand Trunk WESTERN Railway.

The Grand Trunk Railway was bankrupt came under the control of the Canadian government and merged with the Canadian Government Railways to become a primary part of the new Canadian National Railways around 1920. Grand Trunk Western Railway was formed from the parts of the Grand Trunk Railway in Michigan as the American portions of the lines that formed Canadian National were sectioned off into separate subsidiaries.

ANY diesel engine (and most steam engines for that matter since GTR ceased existence 90 years ago) you’ve ever seen with “GT” or “Grand Trunk” on it has really been a GTW engine.

Hi Rambo1

If you access historicbridges.org, then click on Michigan, you will see a list of bridges (I’m getting to the GP-9, trust me[:D]). Once on the Mi. list, click on St. Clair county, then the 10th. st. railroad bridge. Voila (pant…pant!). There is a great photo of #4625 and #4626 in GTW livery crossing the bridge. These locos were rebuilt in the old Battle Creek, Mi. GTW shop back in the late 60’s. They were rebuilt from a bunch of GP-9s that the GTW bought from the UP. I guess they thought rebuilding them would be cheaper than buying new GP-15’s. Note that they were rebuilt from the frame up. They were repowered and the dynamic brakes were removed as well as no turbo-chargers. Wide cabs were installed (note no sun shades on the brakeman side of the cab, cheap-cheap!). I’m in the middle of a project to bash one of these (#4625) to use as a yard goat on my CN/GTW layout. I hope this helps. Gerry S.

Try cnrphotos.com, in motive power under GTW. You should find something.

It’s the best site for reference pictures of CNR and CNR subsidiaries… My main source for superdetailling and kitbashing idea.

Here you got your animal:

For other pictures from the same engine class:

I personally prefer their engine in blue, but looks like your looking for something very specific, good luck with your project. Looks like the extra parts will be quite generic CN stuff.

Matt

In modern times there were actually two Grand Trunks. The Grand Trunk Western was the portion of the original GT in Michigan west to Chicago. The Grand Trunk name also continued to be used for the GT line south of the Canadian border through Island Pond, VT to Portland, ME, and the 4447 was assigned to this New England line. It would have been lettered Grand Trunk (no “Western”). Both the Central Vermont and GT(NE), as well as the DW&P may have legally been part of CN’s GTW subsidiary, but in practice were quite separate members of the CN family.

cx500, you are correct, sir. Even today, the locomotives still in GTW livery (blue/red) are ID’d CN/GTW. Gerry S.
