Pics of High Tech Bumpers

Thought everyone would like to see a couple of pictures of high tech bumpers. They are located in the BNSF/Musket Corp yard north and west of Van Buren and 19th Ave here in Phoenix.

Yup, Santa Fe seems to like the stopping power of a pile of dirt.

The pile at the end of the old segment of Rock Island main that BNSF uses for storage in Amarillo, TX looked more like ballast. One time that I drove past (I was an I-40 coast-to-coast commuter for several years about a decade and a half ago) there was an NS covered hopper high-centered on the pile. Apparently somebody overestimated track capacity by about a car length.

I think you can get these in HO and N scale in a bag from Arizona Rock & Minerals.[:$]

I have several of those…

Hmm… even more than I’d realised.

Nah, I would use paver sand instead of an Arizona Rock & Mineral product. If I had known about these high tech bumpers at the right time, I could have installed some on my layout and saved some pennies.

What are Hi-Tech Bumpers?

Piles of dirt or, in this case, sand.
