Pics Of Our Trip To CO, Rio Grande. (Warning 8 pics)

A few weeks ago my wife and did a great trip to Colorado where we got to see alot, and take in the wonderful sights. My wife, who likes the"train thing" wasnt crazy about it possibly turing into train themed trip. (which of course, I was all about [:)]) There was alot I wanted to see and do. I got my day at Caboose Hobbies and I was thrilled about that along with a promise that we could make a few more stops. Well, turns out, alot of our RV trip went through the heart of Rio Grand Country, including Silverton and Durango. My wife, who has quite atristic eye, and enjoys history, quickly became facsinated with history of the old railroad. Half way though the trip, she figured out how to spot old right of ways in the forest. Impressive! What it made it so great, is we surrounded by it and signs of the great past, were all around us. She had ball taking pictures which I thought were great. I wanted to pass them on to you guys.

This was taken in Gunnison, CO which has a great display. You can walk through an old caboose, whic was quite the experience. I am pretty sure thsi is were the latern came from. The seats were neat to look at as they werent refurbished. You can see the foot marks were the crews rode countless miles in those chairs.

This was also in the narrow G caboose. Wonder how many nights crews hung aournd this to stay warm. Any guesses on how much coffee was made here?

We stopped in Silverton and just happen to get lucky and catch one of the tour trains pulling out

They have a prett

Great pics! I want to go to Co. so bad I got butterflys just looking at your pics. Mike

Looks like a real Buzz, what more can a man ask for, trains, great country, hobby shop and most of all his Wife getting interested in railroad history, Great!!!.

Neat, I was in Denver twice during the ninety’s and didn’t know about Caboose Hobbies, now I kick myself. Great country up there. Can be a real bear in the winter though up in those mountains. Glad you had a good time. heading out that way in NOV. can’t wait.

You are a lucky guy! I really want to go to the US now, Denver in particular! maybe in a few years [:)]

I remember back in the good old days, when Silverton was called Baker’s Park and none of the buildings had been put up yet. The mountains haven’t changed much, though.

Thanks for the pics.

Big John,

Hey it’s good to see someone with a Gordon Wells T-shirt on. Man that’s funny–It’s a small world. We used to go out there all the time when I was young, single and still living in San Diego. I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen McNeil Racing trucks but I use to hang out there with them. I think most of them are in Arizona now.

Also you’re a lucky man for being able to take a trip to Colorado. I so want to get a motorhome and head to Denver. I’ve been talking to the wife about doing it come next Spring/Summer but if all goes well, we should be having kid #2. If so then that will put things like trips off for a while.

Tell us non-Colorado boys what Caboose Hobbies was like.

I think I am lucky that I live in here in Colorado. Caboose Hobbies is nice to go to but it doesn’t quite have the selection they used to (IMO). It still fun to go there and get everything I need. They have a nice selection of stripwood that I frequent for my structures.

Yeah, small world it is. The t-shirt I guess gives clues away to my other passion and profession. I do 4x4 work and love to get out wheeling. After I posted the picturre, I wondered if anyone would know wher eit was. I usually go to Glamis, littel farther north. Nice thing, I think it is the UP’s Sunset Route that boarders the dunes one east side.

Man, Caboose Hobbies was incredible. I bumped into a few folks that said “Aw, is not what it used to be, they had more…” What ever. It still blew my mind. I cant imagine any more. As it is, that one store is about 9 to 10 times bigger than anything we have here in Arizona Yes, I mean that. I think both of our two LHS shops are only around 1700 to 2000 square feet. CH, is 18000. sqft. I turned down the HO isle and it was like looking down a an isle at the grocery store, but loaded with cars and kits. They also had a HUGE selection of scratch building stuff, scenery items that I had never even seen before. Man, it was as close as I think you can get

Hay, I love the K 28s. Good shots.

I should have come down just t see John dance.[:D][:P]
