Pics of Your Woodland Scenics Metal Gas Station?

Has anyone here successfully built and painted the Woodland Scenics white metal kit: Gas Station?

I’d especially be interested in seeing your paint jobs and color choices and getting hints about which AC or other glues worked best. Also cleaning methods. Detergent or vinegar, etc.

Anyone who’s painted theirs red and white in particular? Leaning towards that Philips 66 scheme. (Although the original prototype was Green with red trim.)

W.S.’ ad/catalog shows a creme/yellow with green trim version.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Here is part of a photo. The gas pump was warped as you can see, and I was afraid it would break if I tried to fix it.

I used gap filling CA and a Zip kicker for glue mostly. I may have also used five minute epoxy in some places.

I just washed the parts with soap and water after building it. I primed it with Model Masters light gray, then used a brush with Polly Scale paints for the color. Then a wash of India ink in alcohol.

Hi Elmer,

Happy Holidays to you! Thanks for the pic. Yours is a color scheme I’ve considered if I don’t go with white with red trim. It’s great for me to see it in place/sceniced so that I can get a realistic picture of what I could fit in. I’m considering a red roof if it doesn’t become overpowering in my own rural village. Thanks for the glue tips too and it’s good to see that the paint can look good on the white/pot/metal. I haven’t painted metal up to this point.

I HAVE been trying to figure out what the circle “sign” is on the front gable. It resembles a Xmas wreath, a gable air vent but isn’t and there’s no logo or anything, just a circle. What IS that?

Edited: Oh yeah! Nice modeling! Your layout looks great!

Cheers!

Jim

Thanks.

My color scheme is white with red trim, and a gray roof of course.

I think the circle is the frame to an attic vent.

Merry Christmas.

The sirkle is the frame for an attic vent/window.

Merry Christmas, Elmer and Jay (and all). Happy Chanukah to anyone who celebrates the Festival of Lights. Kwanza too!

Elmer, on my monitor I mistook your heavy weathered white for grey. Thanks. I’ve cracked open the box (Xmas morning) and can now see the vent slits in the center of the circle and after re-examining Elmer’s pic.

If anyone else has painted this model in other colors it would be fun to see them before making a final decision. (Well…semi-final

Hope everyone is having a nice holiday with food on the table and a gift or two.

Thanks, JIm

Although the shot is about the 1965 Mustang GT, it does contain the gas station.

The scene is incomplete here. At least enough is there, to give you an idea of the colors.

I built it so long ago, I don’t have specifics. By the way, have newer pumps: Texaco.

Will see if I have a better pic on this.

Hey, thanks William! Very helpful for us “hard to visualize beforehand” types. I may have to add a one stall garage or…a shade tree for my mechanic, later. I appreciate your going to the trouble during this hectic holiday time.

Elmer, would you by any chance have any other shots of your gas station? I’m thinking I’ll still try that color scheme lst and yours likes very nice. If not, do you recall which paints, (white and especially the red) you chose?

I didn’t see a way to start a “conversation” on your profile but maybe it’s the Egg Nog…

Thanks.

Jim

Hey Jim,

I only have two other photos and they are really far away and don’t show anything.

The paints were basic and are nothing special. Since this was a metal kit, I ‘prime’ them all by painting with a spray can (enamel). More than likely it was Testors flat white. Could have been Model Masters brand, but they are all the same to me. The red was a Polly Scale plain old red, or caboose red. Something bright. Just painted on with a brush. I find that doing it that way gives some variations to the trim color depth. Sort of pre-aging before the wash.

Thanks Elmer. I think I’m going to prime also. The W.S. directions say only to wash with detergent and dry but seeing as this is my lst ever, metal kit, I think I’ll prime lst.

I appreciate your response. If you have a photobucket account or other photo site, I’d love to see more of your layout.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim,

The gas station was on my old layout, now torn down, which was narrow gauge. I am now working on a new layout. Links to both are listed below.

Wow! Glad I asked, Elmer! Beautiful work! I’ll keep up to date with your “new” layout’s progress.
